Letter from Principals - August 2022

Dear Parents/Guardians,

On behalf of the entire staff at King Middle School we are happy to welcome you to the 2022-23 school year.  We are very excited to return in September and launch a new year full of exciting opportunities.   Middle school is an important and exciting time and for the beginning of this year will focus solely on ensuring that students feel a sense of belonging at King.

At King, we believe that all students will succeed when there is a strong partnership between students, staff, and parents.   Our teachers and staff work hard to get to know each student very well.  Our goal is to personalize every student’s experiences and create a strong learning community where all students contribute.  We believe that it is imperative that students feel safe, respected, and pushed to be their best selves.  Each student is part of a Crew.  This is a small group of 12-15 students and a Crew leader.  Through Crew we build community and a sense of belonging for all students.  Your child’s Crew teacher will be reaching out to you before the year starts.

Teachers are excited to welcome students in September.  We have an excellent staff and are welcoming several new teachers as well as our new assistant principal, Jason Bradeen.  Jason joins us from Saco Middle School and has also worked at multiple schools in California and Boston.  He has an extensive background in supporting students as a school counselor and we are very fortunate to have him join our team!

The first day of school is Tuesday, September 6th.  The 6th grade students will arrive at school for an 8:20 AM start and be dismissed at 11:50AM.  The 7th and 8th grade students will arrive at 11:50 for an afternoon session.  All students will be provided with the necessary school supplies and resources for the year with the exception of backpacks. Additionally, breakfast and lunch are free for all students this year.

Finally, our school counselors, Andy Porta and Maureen Salisbury, will be holding tours of the school in late August.  There is no need to make a reservation or contact the school in advance.  All families are welcome and a schedule will be shared in the coming weeks.

Please plan to join us for a virtual Parent Crew meeting on August 30 at 6:00pm.  In the meantime, If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us at kingsecretary@portlandschools.org. We will send another communication to families before the first day of school with details about the start of school.  We are looking forward to seeing you at the start of the new school year and hope that you enjoy the rest of the summer!
