Dear Diary,
It has been a long but beautiful day. It was sunny
most of the day, but then it started getting cloudy and chilly. I
had to make all the medicine that I had run out of. One of my patients
came in today to pick up some things that he had ordered just a while
ago, but my apprentice had sold it to another patient. It was so
frustrating. The medicine was to treat smallpox and it takes awhile to
make, so he had to come back to get it. I also overheard some customers
talking to each other about some kind of signals, something to do with
Paul Revere and the Redcoats. I wish I would have heard the whole thing
because now it has me wondering.
Today I paid my surgeon some of his 60 pounds and my
other men and women some of their 40 pounds. One of my patients came in
today to ask if he needed to have a license to be an apothecary.
I told him no, but I told him he needed to get his medical degree and
it is really hard to get. I told him a lot of people don't even make it
halfway through medical school. I told him that it is a good thing that
he is a male because it is really hard for a female to get through
medical school and become an apothecary.
On my way home I went down King Street. When I got
home from work, my children Sara and Henry were upstairs with Paul and
Allen. When my husband David came back home, I was in the kitchen
making dinner and hanging the clothes. Whenever he comes in the house
it always smells good. Tonight I am going to make chicken pie and
johnny cakes. David always says that I make it best. When I walked in
the house, Allen came in the room and gave me a big hug. He is
always where I am when I am in the house. David told me today that when
he went down to Long Wharf he overheard men saying that the British
were sending 5,000 more troops and that the Sons Of Liberty were having
secret meetings.

Dear Diary,
Today I woke up to Allen crying for me and I think
he is coming down with pneumonia. But it was another beautiful and
sunny day. At work, some customers were telling me about Paul Revere
and the ride he took last night. He was with William Dawes and Dr.
Samuel Prescott during the ride. They left at eleven o'clock last night
to warn Samuel Adams and John Hancock that the British regulars were
coming. The British were coming to get Adams and Hancock, so they had
to get out of there. Before he left, someone put up lanterns in the
Church House. They left Boston to come here to Lexington, or go
somewhere where the British wouldn't find them, but Revere got caught
by two British soldiers. I hope that he gets away and that the British
don't kill him.
Today I made a house call for a new patient and she
said it helped so much that I could go to her house. What she
needed, I did not have, so she had to come back in and get it at dusk
before the shop closed. Then a while after I got back from the house
call, David sent a message by sending Sara to the shop. The note said
that Henry had pneumonia. When I went home and checked, he did have it,
so David had to go back to the shop and get some more medicine, because
I only brought enough home for Allen. Now Allen is becoming better and
Henry gets it. I hope that the rest of the children do not get it.
Tonight when I got home the children wanted more of the chicken pie so
that is what we ate. They all loved it.
Tonight we are going to have a gathering with some
friends and talk about the fighting that has just begun. I am so afraid
of the British coming in to all the houses. Life is so harsh these days
with the fighting starting and the children getting sick. I cannot
believe that the Minutemen are going to fight the British. The British
soldiers might end up coming to my shop to get medicines to heal all
the ones that have wounds, or the ones who are really sick. That will
make the shop go better, but I hope we have enough ingredients for all
the medicines David and I will need to make.

Dear Diary,
Today I woke up to Allen crying again for me, but
when I got up he would not stop crying, so David tried to soothe
him. When he went in, Allen stopped crying. It was not sunny
today, it was cloudy and chilly. Also, today I heard about the rest of
the details from Lexington and Concord. Revere had got captured and had
to go back to Lexington three times before he came back to Boston. The
first time he went was to warn Sam Adams and John Hancock, the second
time was after he had got captured, and the third and last time was
when he had to go back and get a chest that Samuel Adams and John
Hancock left behind. They needed it, so Revere had to go back and get
it. It had important papers. While Revere was carrying the chest, the
first shots of the Revolutionary War were shot. The British knew that
the local militia had been hiding weapons and munitions underground. So
the British went to find the militia, but the Patriots left before the
British, so the British might not catch them.
Today I just got some orders from a couple of the
customers and they ordered some cooking spices, tobacco, toothbrushes,
oil, and candles. But I did not have all of the cooking spices, so I
had to put some together and I had go make some candles, but I had all
the other things ordered. We were really busy today with all the
patients getting sick and I had to make a house call to another new
person. She has influenza and I had to go back to the shop to pick up
the medicine that she needed, but it was already made. Another patient
came in to get her remedy for influenza and I had to make it because we
had none left. It looks like busy and tough days will be ahead for all
of us.

hanging with my friends. The part I liked the most about the expedition
was the webpage and the Boston trip.
