On Expedition: The Story Behind the Discoveries

One might think this major discovery of historical journals was a fantastic stroke of luck, and indeed luck had a role to play. However, these young historians had spent considerable time working with teachers and experts developing their skills and sharpening their powers of historical observation before venturing to Boston.

The expedition really began at King Middle School in Portland, Maine.  Students conducted extensive research on the events that sparked the American Revolution.  These topics are all included in this edition of Sparks of Liberty in the Sparks section.

In addtion, the research included three major historical themes and the role each played in shaping these events.  Our young historians' reflections are included in this section.

Following their in depth investigation, they traveled to Boston to see first hand the locations where these events took place. It was on this expedition that journals, dating back to 1770, were discovered.

They followed up their discovery with historical reenactments and artist renderings of the lives captured in these journals, all revealed here for the first time.

Our hats are to off to these young historians who, treading where more seasoned professionals have gone before them, put flesh and blood on the bones of history.
