Natural History

All species of the genus Esox have the same body shape which is long. Fish are vertebrates which means that they have a backbone.

Habitat

The grass pickerel lives in grassy, grassy areas and deep,deep ponds and lakes.

It is found in North America and throughout the eastern and mid United Sates and up north into Canada and Alaska. They live in heavily vegetated areas of slow moving streams, lakes and ponds.


Physical Description

The grass pickerel is not colorful. It has a pink belly and is long and thin with a dark back. It has eight sensor pores on the under side of its jaw and a dark bar beneath its eyes. It has a blunt snout and small body.

Diet and Feeding Habitat

The grass pickerel is an omnivore and eats plants and other small fish.
