Project Title: Earthquake

Dates: December to Early January, 2001

Application Deadline: Friday, November 17

Project Exploration is King Middle School’s enrichment program. Projects are available to students who demonstrate academic responsibility and are motivated to take active roles in their learning. Participation in projects is determined on a project-by-project basis through applications and teacher nominations. Participating students miss instructional periods; academic performance, therefore, is the most important factor in determining participation.

In the Earthquake project, students will produce a short documentary video about the earthquake structures built and tested by students at the end of October. The goal of the product is to show the audience how students worked together and designed solutions to the problems posed in the earthquake challenge.

The project will help participating students retain and deepen knowledge about the design process, develop a broad picture of how they learn, gain facility with contemporary multi-media tools, and construct a factual narrative using primary sources.

Please complete this application and return it to Mr. Grant’s box in the office by the application deadline listed at the top of this letter. In addition to this form, all applications must include:

• A cover letter explaining: 1) how you have demonstrated academic responsibility this year; and 2) why you want to participate in this project.
• A current typed copy of your resume.
• A list of other activities--drama club, outside plays or music activities, sports, class challenge work, etc.--you plan on pursuing during the course of the project. (Students who are previously committed to more than one time-consuming activity will not be selected.)
