Portland High
School is located on 248 Cumberland Ave. This was the third public
school in America, and is the second oldest school, the Boston Latin
School being the first. Portland High School was founded in 1812. In
the beginning, the
school was divided in two sections, a boys section and a girls section.
The school is a leader in secondary education in the United
States. Portland has two school songs: “Blue and White,” and “The Wearers of Blue,” the school fight song. Portland
offered over fifteen
classes, thirty-two clubs, and twenty-three sports. This sounded so
good that it attracted people like Thomas Reed, a speaker for the house
of
representatives, Robert Peary, the man who discovered the North Pole,
and
John Ford, a major movie director.
We think that Portland High School should be
on the Portland freedom
trail because it is the second oldest public school in the country, and is also one of the
oldest buildings in Maine.
Famous people that changed the world went there, and now people from
all over the country come to see
the school.
