Monument Square : A Special Part of Portland

By Masdison and Angela

Monument Square is located in Portland, Maine. Monument Square is a very important part of Portland because it is one of few true European squares. Monument Square is at the hub of downtown Portland dividing Congress Street from the Old Port and West Port. It is an outdoor meeting place and landmark known by all in the area.
Monument Square is a couple blocks from the famous Victorian Mansion. It was built in 1871 and featured a god named Nike. Monument Square is the site where a sailor and a soldier are honored who faught to defend our young union in the Civil War. The man that is featured in the statue is wearing a uniform of the Civil War era.

Monument Square would be a good part of the Freedom Trail because it is very well known for being one of the European squares around the world, so it would be a great part of a trail that people come from around the world to see.

Monument Square would also be a good part of the Freedom Trail because there are examples of colonial life and things that happened during the Civil War, also Monument Square was part of the Civil War so it would be well connected to the Freedom Trail.
