Eastern Cemetery: Where Portland's History Rests

By Malinka, Luke B., Elizabeth, and Tristan

The Eastern Cemetery, amazingly, was not always known as the Eastern Cemetery. To brief on the amazing history of the oldest cemetery in Portland, we must turn back the clock. Before George Cleeve was buried there; before the ships Boxer and Enterprise were buried there. We are going back to 1717. It was merely known as the burial ground by the locals, and they used it as a festive place on some holidays. That is, before 1719. In 1719, George Cleeve named it the Eastern Cemetery.

In my opinion, the Eastern Cemetery would be a great addition to the Portland Freedom Trail, as it is the resting place for many Portland people who fought and died for freedom, such as the Enterprise and it’s crew, an American ship that sank fighting the British.
