Cleeves and Tucker: The Godfathers of Portland
By: Jessica, Sheldon, Holly, and Pete

In 1632 George Cleeves and Richard Tucker were the first settlers in what is now Portland. They were granted land to be able to settle at the foot of Munjoy Hill. They built Portland's first house on the corner of what is now Hancock and Fore St. They were farmers but also became lumber men to make way for new clear land. They  tried to develope trade in fish and furs with the Indians, and in 1637 Fernando Gorges, the proprietor of Maine, granted them a deed to the land on Casco Neck. Then it was easy for them to sell Cape Elizabeth.

This site should be on the Freedom Trail because they were the first people to arrive in Portland. They were influential, and helped start Portland. They went to Cape Elizebeth to be free from the king. They were kicked out of Cape Elizabeth which caused them to be the first people to settle in what is now Portland.
