Diary of a Warriorby Lucas Today I decided to warn some of
our warriors about the battle for Plymouth Plantation. I told the
warriors it was only an act to show the bearded men that we are not
fools and know how to attack . They did not heed my words . Within a
few hours half of them were dead.

Prologue
1760-1766
My name is Patauk or Running Wolf. While I was in the village a few years ago I was captured during a trade of beaver pelts with the new settlers and taken to a very wealthy white family. They put a bag on my head and hit me with a spit. While I was there the white family taught me how to read and write. I was very grateful ........ until I found out they built on our land and were to turn me into a slave. I was angered beyond comprehension. Later my tribe burned down their house and beat the owners of the houses. That was a little harsh. We were the main people to start the French and Indian War . Now that I am reunited with my tribe we will rebel against the white folk . Day

I swiftly made my way toward my tribe leader’s hut. The overwhelming musty smell of smoke filled my nostrils. I bowed my head to my chief. Raise your head and tell me what is happening with our efforts to capture Plymouth stronghold , he said in a melancholy voice. Our efforts are going not well my chief I murmured lightly. As I assumed , I knew we could never win. Ha those foolish settlers , we have passed my expectations. He said happily. But if You knew we could not win then why did you lead us into this death trap; I thought to my self because I would never dare talk to my chief in that manner. I stormed out of the hut with mixed emotions. I couldn't tell what to do. Day

Today I decided to warn some of our warriors about the battle for Plymouth Plantation. I told the warriors it was only an act to show the bearded men that we are not fools and know how to attack . They did not heed my words. Within a few hours half of them were dead. Somehow the chief got word of what I said ; he said there will be severe repercussions to my actions. I am afraid for my life, if they don't kill me they will dismiss me from the tribe . If they dismiss me then no tribe will take me in Towards dinner the aroma of buffalo filled the air, the smell was good but didn't calm my stomach from the inevitable punishment. Day 3 I woke to the unusual sound of yelling floating through my hut as if it was from far away. I did not have enough time to put on my mocassans on because before I knew it three men picked me up and tossed me out of my hut. My chief was scowling at me. I could tell I was in trouble. I had half the mind to run , but then I saw the others who I warned for the reason to attack. The rest of the tribe was oblivious to the reason of punishment. We were put in our own and were scolded at and insulted for multiple hours. I felt like the hours were days and the minuets were hours. I heard the other warriors that I talked to and I were to stay in the tee pees of solitude over night. Day

All night I got no sleep. In the morning the chief came out and slapped me many times in the face. I felt the resentment in his voice and hand. When he was finished he called us traitors. he would not stand for it. I over herd some warriors talking ; I heard them say Running Wolf fought for the colonists . I heard he gave them information on our plans to attack they were saying said chief. NO NO NO, You have it all wrong he told us not to fight because this he knew we would never win this war said running dog. They have ... WHACK . The cheif hit Barking dog on the head withe end of his staff before he could even finish speaking. OUT. OUT NOW I WANT YOU OUT OF MY TRIBE !! He exclaimed. He opened the tee pee of solitude and made us leave. We managed to persuaded six more tribe mates to join us. Day

Now we have fifteen people with us. There are the ten warriors that were also dismissed and five other people that left voluntary . They elected me as their leader and chief . I could not tell if this would be a honor or a burden . I guess they have no idea how old I am . I don't think I act like 25 years of age . We were soon to arrive at a British camp . I knew my old chief was quick to attack any people who came to America ; ever since the massacre at Fort Henry in 1775 in New York when the British surrendered to our friends the Montclams and us killed 185 and took 310 British captive . I am glad to say I did not participate in the capture. Day

At the start of the day we reached the British camp of William Trent. When it was noon I could not tell if they would kill me when I walked up to the walls of the fort, or welcome me with open arms. I finally got over my fear and walked up to the fort with my arms up to show I did not have a weapon. The archer spoke in a low monotonous voice. the sentry asked me what I wanted. I replied I wish to speak to the legendary William Treat I told him that it is very urgent you are in grave danger. Yes sir , right away , the guard yelled down. Before I knew it he was back with William. Why are we in danger? he yelled in what sounded like a irritated voice. A tribe of Indians is com ming to take your fort because you are in there way of their arrow of death , I told him. why should I trust you ? You are not British. Treat said lightly. Fine , but they are coming, I screamed angrily. Then I left. When I got back I told the rest of my tribe. I don't think they were to upset by the looks on their faces but they tried to be upset. Epilogue
Later on Running Wolf and his tribe went on to join the settlers in the war. Two years after the war he his wife and 3 children became legal citizens. Two more years later he and his wife were killed by white people for on other reason other than the color of their skin in a fire. They buried his remains in the middle of Granary Burring Ground. |
