Diary of Pocahontas

by Jenessa

Today is the first time I have ever seen white men.  They came to Werowocomo in a big boat. I have never really seen any  big ships before. The only boats I have been in or seen are the ones my father and my brothers make. I met Captain John Smith he is the most likable and friendly. Although he is very sweet it is so scary to meet someone new especially after hearing all the things I’ve heard about the English.

I did not think he would talk to me but he was different from all the other Englishmen I had a feeling. We sat down on a blanket that he had in his bag. He said his mother made it for him when he was six. It was beautiful blue with red threading.  I wish I had a mother to make me a blanket. I would probably have the same colors. I love blue and red . He told me he was planing to lead an expedition. In December he would be close to Werowocomo. I was so excited thinking that I might see him again. When I asked him he said no, he probably will not be seeing me again . It would be to dangerous The Werocomo people did not even know that the english were here. I was not even supposed to be talking to him. If my father knew he would be very angry, he thinks I am running with the other children. As we were telling each other about our different types of food and teaching each other our different languages, I realize that I should not be here. I was scared my father and my people were against the English and most English were against us. I told him I needed to go and hurried home.  It was along time before I got home. When I finally reached my house I was hungry. Smith had asked me if I wanted something to eat. I tried to be polite and said no. When I walked into the long house I saw father my through the window he was throwing a stone at a squirrel that came to nibble at our crops. We have to do that a lot. I walked over to him and said, hello father he asked me where I have been for so long .  I said I told you I was running with the other children. He believed me he always believes me.

December, 1607

The last thing that I wrote was about meeting John Smith. Of course seven months later he was not there, he had gone back with the English. When I woke up,my father and his men came to my room when I was sleeping he told the chiefs something in his ear. I asked what is it. He would not tell me,I kept asking so he told me that the british have come for food and gold. I asked him how many there where. He said he wished he knew. One of his men said they captured an English man his name was John Smith. They brought him to the long house where they questioned him. I did not want to show on my face that I knew something, but I was scared for John smith. My father left to go see John Smith. I  asked if I could come. He said I had to stay in the long house. I did not listen,I looked out the window but I did not see any thing because the long house was in the middle of the corn fields. I walked a little ways to the spot where we talk to our people and tell them what is happening in werowocomo, I saw lots of people around in a circle, I saw Smith on two large stones. Two men had lifted stone clubs above there head about to smash on smiths head. I asked what is happening. My father said I ordered them to kill smith. I was very scared I did not know what to do. So I ran over and put my head on smiths. I begged my father to not kill him. He stopped the execution.

Epilogue

After Powhatan stopped the execution a couple days later he adopted Smith as his son.
Pocahontas and smith became best friends he called her his guardian. On April 15,1614 she married John Rolf. In 1606 she went to London. On the voyage home on 1617 when she was 22 she died of pneumonia or possibly tuberculoses. She is buried in gravesend, England.
