Deforestation in Maine
Deforestation.
Deforestation has two meanings.  One is the state of being clear of trees; another is the removal of trees.
Deforestation is happening all over the world
for many different reasons.

Deforestation does damage to ecosystems by destroying habitats and getting rid of trees.  Trees are a very important part of any ecosystem.  They are shelter for many animals, they provide food with their leaves, berries, and bark, and they make oxygen for people and animals to breathe.

I am worried that, during my lifetime, all the world's rain forests will be completely deforested.
Deforestation in Maine.
Most deforestation in Maine is done by paper companies, forest contractors, and some private landowners.  In the early 1800s, there was a high demand for lumber and wool.  Sheep pastures had to be cleared, and the lumber had to be shipped other places.  80% of forests in southern and central New England had been cleared by 1840.

This picture shows deforestation in the united states from 1620 to 1920.
Notice how maine is all forest in 1620, mostly forest in 1850, then in 1920 there are barely any forests left.
Things you can do to help.
Deforestation will always  continue, but there are things you can do to help the environment.
Always remember the three "R"s:
Reduce the amount of plastic and waste products you have to use.
Reuse things like water bottles, foam trays, and plastic shopping bags as much as you can.
Recycle bottles, cans, newspaper, cardboard and other recyclables.
