Snowshoe Hare

Physical Description:

Snowshoe Hares change colors in winter. They are white in the winter and they are brownish blackish in the summer. They also have black ear tips and white borders.

Diet and Feeding Habits:

They eat green grasses, blue grass, pussy toe, and horse tails. During winter they feed on twigs, bark, and evergreens.

Reproduction:   

Their period of pregnancy lasts 36 days. Females can have up to 8 babies but most have four. Their breeding season is from mid March through August. The babies are weaned in 14 to 28 days.

Habitat:    

Snowshoe Hares are found in open fields like swamps, fence rows and riverside thickets. 

Role in the Ecosystem:

Snowshoe Hares are prey of the mountain lion, bob cat, mink, weasel, and various birds of prey.
