Ecology

What is Ecology?
Ecology is the study of interactions  betweenorganisms and their environment.

What is an ecosystem?
An ecosystem is a biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment.

Food Chains
Limiting Factors in Populations
A food chain is a chain arranged in order of rank, used for animals, it is set up that one, whether it is an animal or a plant, is dependent on the next as a source of food.
In every ecosystem, there must be a limiting factor such as a predator.  If there were no limiting factors, then the populations of some animals may rise too high, causing the food chain to be unbalanced.  For example, in a Maine forest if there was nothing that eats the deer, the only way deer would die would be from old age and accidents.  That would cause the deer population to rise.  Then all those deer would eat all the plants, leaving none or very little for others who need to eat those plants.

More Limiting Factors
More limiting factors are food, water, and shelter.  If food is a limiting factor it usually means there is a shortage in food.  This means that as the population of one species grows, there is not enough food for the new babies of the animals.  This applies for food, water, and shelter.

Symbiotic Relationships
There are three types of symbiotic relationships, Mutualism, Commensalism, and Parasitism.  Commensalism is a relationship between two species in which one species benefits,  and the other is not affected, such as a anemone and a clown fish, the clown fish cleans the anemone's tentacles and the anemone provides shelter for the clown fish.  Parasitism is a relationship where on species benefits and the other is harmed.  Mutualism is a relationship that is helpful to both organisms.
