Physical Description
The gray squirrel is also called the silver gray squirrel
because of its distinguishing light silver back.
The dorsal (upper) surface is bright steel gray and appears frosted
due to white-tipped hairs. The ventral (underside) surface is creamy
white. It weighs 1 to 1.5 pounds, and is 16-21 inches long.
Diet and Feeding Habits
The grey squirrel eats mushroooms, trees, flowers,
buds, caterpillers, and plant shoots. Owls, hawks, coyotes, bears,
and golden eagles eat the gray squirrel.
Reproduction
Grey squirrels mate in late winter and spring. After a 44-day gestation
period, females give birth to a littler of two to seven young.
Habitat:
They live near wooded areas and hardwood trees in forests, suburban
and urban areas in the eastern half of the U.S. Grey squirrels will take
shelter in leaf nests they have constructed or in tree dens.
Role in the Ecosystem: The grey squirrel is a tree dwelling rodent. It
was introduced to Britain in about 30 sites between 1876 and 1929. It has
easily adapted to parks and gardens replacing the red squirrel. The grey
squirrel's job is its part in the food web, feeding the hawk, coyote, bear,
and eagle.
