There are many different kinds mammals in Maine. Some of the mammals are the bobcat, cotton tail rabbit, coyote, gray fox, marten, mink, muskrat, opossum, river otter, raccoon, skunk, long tail weasel, short tail weasel, and the white tail deer. But some of them are endangered or threatened. The gray wolf, eastern cougar, northern right whale, humpback whale, finback whale, and sei whale are federally endangered mammals in Maine. A little info of some of the mammals in Maine:
The beaver is the largest rodent. It has a flat tail and large front
teeth. The beaver's tail is about 11-17". Its habitat are swamps, marshes,
rivers, streams, and lakes. They are herbivores so they eat plants, water
plants, and tree twigs. Beavers are nocturnal.
The raccoon has brown hair and a black mask. Eats sweet foods, fruits, nuts,
bird eggs, insects, and frogs. Length is 27-37" and weighs 12-48lbs. The
habitat is wetlands and some developed areas. Raccoons are nocturnal.
The red fox has a red coat with a white-tipped bushy tail. The length is
30-45" and weighs 8-15lbs. They like to eat birds and mammals in the winter.
In the summer they eat fruits and vegetation. They live in wooded areas and
brushlands. Red fox are shy, nervous and have very good smelling.
The black bear is not only black but has a cinnamon color and patches of
white on its chest. The height is 3-3.5 ft and weighs 203-595lbs. The habitat
is fairly remote forests and some swamps. Black bears eat vegetation including
twigs, leaves, buds, nuts, and fruits. Black bears mark trees by clawing
and ripping off the bark.
The fisher is a mammal with a long and thing body. The length is 33-40"
and weighs 4-20lbs. Fishers live in the forest or brushlands. They eat
small mammals, porcupine, berries and nuts. They are solitary and nocturnal.
The bobcat is part of the cat family so it has a catlike face, It also has black tipped ears. The length 28-49", tail is 3-7", and it weighs 14-68". Bobcats live in broken forests. It eats rabbits, mice, porcupine, squirrels, and cave bats. They are solitary animals and area active during the day and night. |
