Canadian Lynx

Lynx Canadensis

Physical Description: The lynx is different colors but is mostly yellowish - brown. The tail is long and black, the fur is long and thick, the ears have long black hair on the tip of the ear, the paws are big and hairy.


Diet and Feeding Habits: Lynx eat hares, rodents, birds, and fish. In the winter and fall they will kill and eat deer, and large animals that are weakened by hunting season.


 

Reproduction: Lynx mate during February or March every year. The babies are born in April and May there are usually 4 babies born. The young are sometimes born in a hollow logs, trees, underground, tunnels, etc.



Habitat: You can usually find lynx in mature forests with an underground den,  they can also be found in open forest, rocky areas or tundra. They can live in different types of habitats.



Role in the Ecosystem: Canadian Lynx are important because they keep prey population down. If the Lynx population decreases the population of Snowshoe hares increase.
