American Toad

bufo americanus

By, Alexis Perkins

Classification

Kingdom: animalia
Phylum: chordata
Class: amphibia
Order: anura
Family: bufonidae
Genus: Bufo
Species: bufo americanus

Physical Description

The american toad's skin is rough and bumpy. Their color is from tan to almost black, also sometimes it is green, although it is very rare. Their dark colors help them blend in to the ground so that if a predator is near, they won't be seen, especially if an owl is hunting the american toad at night, it is VERY hard to see them at night time.

Diet and Feeding Habits

American toads normally eat large numbers of insects (flies, beetles, ladybugs, etc.), snails, and earth worms. When they need water, they absorb it through their skin instead of drinking it through their mouths.

Reproduction

When the american toad is calling for a mate, it puffs out its throat to show other male toads to stay away. They breed from early April to late July. When the eggs are laid, there are up to 12,000. The eggs usually hatch within four days.

Habitat

The American Toad lives in fresh water ponds. There are always dense patches of vegetation surrounding it, so they can lay their eggs. They need large amounts of insects for food and so they can have something to do for the ecosystem.

Role in the Ecosystem

In an ecosystem, the american toad controls the populations of insects. It is a carnivore, and it is not endangered so far. Carnivore: eats only meat. Herbivore: eats only plants. Omnivore: eats both plants and meat.
