Windsor 6 Visits Osher Map Library

On November 14th and 15th, Windsor 6 went to the Osher Map Library at USM, as part of our Mapping Change expedition. Our task was to find answers to the scavenger hunt we were given about Portland Maps.

At the library, there were maps from the 1500s to the present. They had maps made from several materials, for instance there were maps made from stone, maps on plates, globes and the usual paper.

On our scavenger hunt, there were about 15 questions, but at the exhibit there were at least 98 maps. We only had 30 minutes, but of course, Windsor 6 did a great job!

Students and Teachers Head to Baxter Woods and Evergreen Cemetary, Learning to Map Change

Windsor 6 has been busy working on their expedition, Mapping Change. We had an “Amazing Race” around King Middle School as our kick-off. In each class, students have been studying mapping. Social studies has focused on types of maps. In science, the students are learning about the succession of a forest, and we have been mapping parts of Baxter Woods and Evergreen Acres as part of this work. Math class has been focusing on measurement, and in language arts we have been writing about the teachers from information on their personal maps. Upcoming activities include entering data from our trip to Evergreen Acres into our laptops, visiting Osher Map Library, researching a site from the World Heritage map, and asking students to create their own personal map. On November 2nd, we will have a visit from professionals cartographers! Our final products should be on display for conference time.

House Developing Student Weblog Team to Streamline Communication Among Parents, Teachers and Students

Check out the new Windsor 6 Blog to stay in touch with the latest news from the house. It may be a little disorganized to start, but with a little time and practice, we hope you will find this new communication tool helpful. Homework is listed here too. Also, don't forget to add your comments/suggestions. It is a blog, afterall.
