Windsor 6 -- All Stars
In each of our classes...
We elected classmates to create and present speeches about what we were
doing in each of our classes for our expedition. The students delivered
their speeches at Hadlock Field during our culminating event. A section
of each of the speeches is shown below; click on more to see the rest. Enjoy!
In Social
Studies

by
Caroline
During our expedition in social studies, we made a time line for the
back
of our baseball cards. The first thing we did was pick 10 - 15
events from our life. After that we organized the facts into a
time line. We picked six events to put on the back of our
baseball
card. |
In Computer Class

by
Jake
In computer class with Ms. Griscom everybody in Windsor 6 put together
baseball cards for themselves, with material we made in other classes.
This included life time lines (social studies), an excerpt from our two
essays “How am I unique?” and “How am I a team player?" (which we wrote
in language arts), we chose one of our many dominant and
recessive traits, our team logo, and our team names - Felis, Tigris,
Camelops and Panthera- ( from science). More... |
In Science Class

by
Eleanor
All of our teachers did a fantastic job finding ways to incorporate
making a baseball card into all our different classes, but science must
have been the hardest class to connect to that idea. They
certainly came up with a good idea though, because what we did in
science class was definitely a hit! More... |
In Math

by
Paloma
The things we did in math class for the expedition were hard but fun at
the same time. We measured ourselves so we could divide by a number to
make our baseball cards. We even had a class taught by Mrs. Bouchard,
our vice principal. She taught us how to draw self portraits, which
really helped us make our baseball cards! |
In Language Arts

by
Emma
We constructed two essays in our language arts class using our guiding
questions: “How am I unique?” and “How am I a team player?". We learned
the “art” of writing essays. An essay has five parts, or paragraphs,
and it is used to persuade the reader into thinking your opinion is
correct. More... |
Working as a team
by Zoe
I think Windsor 6 worked together very nicely as a team in the past
month or so. One of the best ways we worked as a team was when we had
to do our rookie cards. It took everyone so long to get them done.
There were times when Mrs. Tuttle needed kids after school, and
everyone came and
helped out. Team work made us come together as a team. Windsor 6 All
Stars are the best team of students there are. |
The Complete Speeches
In Computer Class by Jake
In computer class with Ms.
Griscom everybody in Windsor 6 put together baseball cards for
themselves, with material we made in other classes. This included life
time lines (social studies), an excerpt from our two essays “How am I
unique?” and “How am I a team player?” (which we wrote in language
arts). We chose one of our many dominant recessive traits, our
team logo, and
our team names - Felis, Tigris, Camelops and
Panthera- (from science). We also used laptops in L.A. and science to
help us with this expedition. In L.A. we used them for typing our team
player essays, where we picked our excerpts. In science we Googled
our team names by typing in any animal and finding their scientific
names, and some of us looked up our dominant and recessive traits on
the laptops. Also on the card was our complete minor league history
which showed where we had attended in elementary and preschool.
We were given a layout plan to follow, which we called our “rookie
template”, which was different boxes that contained: the title -
Windsor
6 All Star rookie card-, the team logo, personal stats, the excerpt
from
our essay, minor league history, and important life moments.
We are using a typing program called “Micro-type”. Without this
program our cards probably wouldn’t be done. Micro-type
taught us how to type without looking at our hands and to look at the
screen and how to type fast. Our school is so lucky to have
computers for everyone. It’s much more interesting to work on laptops
then to work by hand. It also saves time because if we made these
cards by hand we would do draft by draft, while with a computer you can
erase that one word and fix it. Just a couple of days ago, we had a
problem with one of our servers so we couldn’t save but we just kept
going and we saved it into another place. A big thing that we learned
in computer class was how to save our work in all programs because if
you didn’t, you would lose your work. The purpose of this expedition
was to learn to work as a team. In computer class many students showed
that. If somebody finished, he or she would start walking around to
help others, This was a very productive process. That that’s most of
what we did in computer class but all classes were very important in
this expedition.
In Language Arts by
Emma
We
constructed two essays in our language arts class using our guiding
questions: “How am I unique?” and “How am I a team player?" We learned
the “art” of writing essays. An essay has five parts, or paragraphs,
and it is used to persuade the reader into thinking your opinion is
correct.
We typed our essay on our iBooks and then learned how to transfer it on
to our baseball cards. The Windsor
All Stars
would agree that this took much time and effort, but the finished
product, a rookie card, looked wonderful when it was completed. From
first draft to finished product, we learned more and more about
computers and how we can use them in language arts. We also learned how
to work as a team in our Windsor 6 community.
Just like us, our school is unique. Instead of traditional learning, we
use an expeditionary approach: we learn by doing. Today, we are here
to show you what Windsor 6 did on our expedition in a fun, exciting
way. We have now put all the pieces of the puzzle together; math,
science, social studies, computer class, and finally language arts.
In Science Class by
Eleanor
All
of our teachers did a fantastic job finding ways to incorporate making
a baseball card into all our different classes, but science must have
been the hardest class to connect to that idea. They certainly came up
with a good idea though, because what we did in science class was
definitely a hit! We have been doing a unit on genetics and heredity.
Since one of our guiding questions for this expedition is: “How am I
unique?”, after we learned the basics of genetics, we started trying to
discover our own dominant and recessive traits. It took us a little
while to figure it out, but with the help of the computer, each student
had to have one dominant and one recessive trait that they liked best
about themselves. Once everyone had those two traits, we added them to
the stats box on the back of our baseball cards, which you can see a
preview of on the Jumbotron today. So there it is, a day in the life of
your child’s science class. I hope you are enjoying this afternoon's
festivities. I know that we Windsor 6 students have really enjoyed
doing this expedition; it has been a great introduction to the world of
expeditionary learning. Thank you all so much for coming, and GO
WINDSOR 6 ALL STARS!!!!
